Gunfight in eastern Sri Lanka kills 5, as ferry set to leave for besieged north

Associated Press, Fri August 25, 2006 01:12 EDT . - - COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - (AP) A gunfight between Tamil Tiger rebels and security forces in eastern Sri Lanka - killed five insurgents and left one police officer wounded, the military said Friday. Sri Lanka - 's Tamil rebels have been fighting for over two decades for a separate homeland for the island nation's 3.2 million ethnic minority Tamils who have suffered decades of repression by the majority Sinhalese.

The northern Jaffna Peninsula, which the Tamils consider the heartland of their culture, has seen some of the worst fighting since the two sides signed a cease-fire four years ago.

The fighting has virtually isolated the peninsula, with private road, sea and air access cut off. Hundreds of foreigners, including international aid workers and Sri Lankans with foreign passports visiting friends or family in the north, have been trapped.

It wasn't immediately clear how many people would get on the ferry, which has seats for only 150 people.

The ferry was also returning to Jaffna five Sri Lankan doctors who had been attending a conference in the capital, Colombo, when the Tigers made a major push to reclaim the peninsula on Aug. 11.

``I'm a doctor, a cancer specialist. I am the only cancer specialist in Jaffna. And due to this war I cannot serve the Jaffna people,'' Dr. J. Jayakumaran told The Associated Press by phone as he waited for the boat to leave.

Associated Press reporter Gemunu Amarasinghe in Trincomalee contributed to this report.
