Sri Lankan military says air force bombed Tamil Tiger weapons stockpile

Associated Press, COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - (AP) Sri Lanka - 's air force on Wednesday bombed a Tamil rebel weapons depot in the island's north, the Defense Ministry said, but the guerrillas called it a deliberate attack on civilians.

``Our air force has (destroyed) the targets which were the ammunition and weapons dump,'' military spokesman Brig. Prasad Samarasinghe said. The location was also used by the rebels to assemble anti-personnel mines, he said.

No details were available on the damage inflicted by the airstrike.

The Tamil Tiger rebels confirmed the air raid, but said the target was a civilian settlement.

``Some houses were damaged and no casualties have been reported so far,'' the rebels said in an e-mailed statement to The Associated Press.

The rebels accused the government of attempts to disrupt a ceremony honoring Anton Balasingham, a rebel leader who died in London last week.

The funeral for Balasingham, who died Thursday at age 68, was scheduled to take place in London later Wednesday.
